Board of Health Responsibilities-General
The Board of Health is responsible for permitting and enforcing local health, safety, and environmental laws passed by the Massachusetts Legislature and regulations promulgated by the Department of Public Health (MDPH) and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). Responsibilities include oversight of drinking water wells, bathing beaches, sewage disposal and septic systems, solid waste disposal, air quality, food protection, the housing and sanitary code, animal and insect control, cemeteries and burial permits, communicable disease reporting and control, and occupational and community health issues. Some of these responsibilities are covered by or shared with other local or state agencies. In recent years Boards of Health have been involved with public health aspects of emergency and disaster preparedness planning.
