Private Wells
A source of potable water is required to obtain a building permit for a new house. A private well is used when a municipal or community water supply is not available. West Stockbridge has adopted well regulations in 1990 which address permitting, minimum setbacks, water quality and construction standards.  A permit from the Town is required to construct or decommission a well. All wells must be constructed by a Massachusetts registered well driller. A list of well drillers and other information is available at:  http://www.mass.gov/dcr/waterSupply/welldril/index.htm. The DEP web page for private wells which includes a link to well guidelines referenced by West Stockbridge well regulations may be found at: http://mass.gov/dep/water/drinking/privatew.htm.
